Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate position size from a stop-loss?

Decide the most you will lose on one trade, for example 1% of capital. Divide that amount by the distance between your entry and your stop-loss. The result is the number of shares; it is capped by how many shares your capital can buy.

What percentage should I risk per trade?

Many traders risk between 0.5% and 2% of capital per trade so that a run of losses does not wipe out the account. The right number depends on your strategy and is your decision; this calculator only does the arithmetic.

Are charges included?

Yes. It estimates brokerage, STT, exchange fees, stamp duty and GST for one buy and one sell at your stop-loss and at your target, using Zerodha’s retail rates, so you see the loss and gain after charges.

Can the loss be bigger than my risk amount?

Yes. In a fast market or a gap, a stop-loss order can fill worse than the stop price, and charges add to the loss. Treat the risk amount as a plan, not a guarantee.
