Profit before charges, if held to expiry.
Each point is the value at expiry for that underlying price. Before expiry, premiums also move with time and volatility.
Working out the charges…
Charges use Zerodha’s retail rates and assume you close by trading, not by exercise (exercise attracts STT on the intrinsic value).Frequently asked questions
How is the breakeven of an option calculated?
For a call, breakeven at expiry is the strike plus the premium paid. For a put, it is the strike minus the premium. The underlying has to move past that level before the position makes money at expiry, before charges.
What is the maximum loss when buying an option?
When you buy a call or a put, the most you can lose is the premium you paid, multiplied by the lot size and the number of lots, plus charges. Selling (writing) options can lose much more: a short call has no theoretical limit.
Does this include charges and STT?
Yes, when the option has value at expiry: it estimates brokerage, STT, exchange and SEBI fees, stamp duty and GST for closing by a trade just before expiry, using Zerodha’s retail rates. Exercise at expiry attracts STT on the intrinsic value instead, which this estimate does not model.
Why is my profit different before expiry?
Before expiry, an option’s price includes time value and depends on volatility. This calculator shows the value at expiry only. Use it to understand the shape of the trade, not to predict the premium on a given day.
Which lot size should I use?
Use the current lot size of the contract you trade, published by NSE. Lot sizes are revised from time to time, so the example values here are only examples.
